May 31, 2022Victoria Day has been observed in Canada since at least 1845, originally falling on Victoria’s actual birthday, May 24th. The holiday has always been a distinctly Canadian observance and continues to be celebrated across the country. It now falls on the Monday between the 18th and the 24th.
For most Canadians, Victoria Day unofficially signals the start of the summer season in Canada. Cottages are opened up, campsites are being used, boats and paddlers are out on lakes, etc.
The holiday is known in parts of Canada as “May Two-Four”; a reference to May 24 and the Canadian slang for a case of twenty-four beers (a “two-four”). The holiday weekend is also known as the “May long weekend”.
